The Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) is a major public super-specialty hospital and medical university located in the Punjagutta area of Hyderabad, Telangana. It is a premier centre for tertiary medical care, research and education in India.
History and Establishment
NIMS began as the Nizam’s Orthopaedic Hospital, with the foundation stone laid in 1961 and the hospital inaugurated in 1964. Initially under the Nizam’s Charitable Trust, it was later taken over by the Government and developed into a full super-specialty institute. Through legislative acts in the 1980s, it was established as a state medical institute and subsequently as a university with expanded facilities and services.
Founder & Leadership
While the original orthopaedic hospital was built under the auspices of the 7th Nizam’s Charitable Trust, NIMS today is administered by the Government of Telangana. The Institute’s leadership includes Dr. Bheerappa Nagari as Director and Dr. Liza Rajasekhar as Dean, guiding clinical services, academics and strategic growth.

NIMS functions both as a hospital and a medical university, providing postgraduate and doctoral medical education. It conducts MD, MS, M.Ch, D.M, Ph.D. and paramedical diploma programs across approximately 40 disciplines, recognised by the National Medical Commission.
Facilities & Capacity
The hospital campus includes multiple specialty blocks, emergency care and diagnostic services. It has close to 900–1,000+ beds with a range of general wards, private rooms and intensive care units. NIMS also publishes a monthly medical journal, “The Clinical Proceedings of Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences”.
